IPERI
The Illinois Pipeline Emergency Response Initiative (IPERI) enhances the ability of emergency responders, dispatchers, incident commanders, and pipeline operators to safely manage pipeline emergencies through training, communication, and collaboration.
IPERI training is delivered in partnership with the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI), the State Fire Academy for Illinois, and is offered at no cost to participating agencies.
Available Training
Pipeline Emergencies – First Responder Awareness
This course provides firefighters and emergency responders with the knowledge needed to:
- Recognize pipeline infrastructure
- Identify potential product releases
- Conduct risk assessments
- Implement public safety actions
- Coordinate notifications with pipeline operators
Pipeline Emergencies – Initial Incident Command
Designed for chief officers and command staff, this course focuses on:
- Pipeline hazards within your jurisdiction
- Strategic and tactical decision-making
- Initial Incident Action Plan development
- Emergency public notification considerations
- Safe incident management practices
Pipeline Emergencies – 911 Dispatcher / PSAP
This course equips telecommunicators and dispatch supervisors to:
- Identify potential pipeline emergencies
- Gather critical incident information
- Support field responders
- Coordinate notifications and response resources

Pipeline emergencies are low-frequency but high-consequence events. IPERI helps Illinois fire departments, emergency communications centers, and response agencies prepare for these incidents before they occur through realistic, role-specific training.
